Resveratrol

Resveratrol (Japanese Knotweed) is a natural compound found in plants, particularly in the skin of red grapes, berries, and peanuts. It is a type of polyphenol with strong antioxidant properties, meaning it helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Resveratrol has been studied for its potential health benefits, including its ability to improve heart health, reduce inflammation, and possibly slow the aging process. One of its most notable effects is its possible activation of sirtuins, a group of proteins linked to longevity and metabolic regulation.

Benefits

Potential Benefits

Antioxidant & Anti‐inflammatory effects

It helps neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and up-regulate endogenous antioxidant enzymes (e.g., superoxide dismutase, catalase) in animal/cell studies.

It also modulates inflammatory signalling: reducing production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as IL-6, TNF-α), inhibiting NF-κB pathway, COX-2 expression, etc.

These effects make it a candidate for reducing oxidative stress & chronic inflammation, which underlie many chronic diseases.

Cardiovascular & vascular health

Resveratrol has been shown to improve endothelial (blood vessel lining) function, increase nitric oxide (NO) production (leading to better vasodilation), reduce oxidative damage in vessels.

It may help lower (in some studies) blood pressure, reduce arterial stiffness, and potentially modulate lipid profiles (e.g., reduce LDL oxidation).

Metabolic health: glucose, insulin sensitivity, obesity

Some evidence suggests resveratrol may improve insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism, and support metabolic health (especially in people with metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes).

It may inhibit fat accumulation, stimulate fat oxidation, and support mitochondrial health (energy production) in some models.

 Neuroprotection & brain health

Animal/cell studies show resveratrol may protect neurons from damage, reduce brain inflammation, oxidative stress, and improve signals related to cognitive health.

There is some preliminary human work but it’s far less robust than for animals.

Cancer & cell growth regulation (preliminary)

In laboratory and animal models, resveratrol has shown potential to inhibit cancer cell proliferation, induce apoptosis, and interfere with multiple signalling pathways involved in tumour development.

However: human clinical evidence is very limited and far from definitive.

Ageing / longevity (speculative)

Because of its effects on signalling pathways (e.g., sirtuins, AMPK) and the above benefits (antioxidant, metabolic), there is interest in resveratrol as a “longevity” compound.

But this is highly speculative in humans — much stronger in model organisms than in human trials.
